How I Did It: Stephanie Sparkles, Founder of Bliss Cakes

I live my life by a simple motto: “Follow your heart.” I’ve always felt that when your heart is sparkling, everything goes smoother. That’s why launching a gourmet cupcake company was a natural choice for me.

Bliss Cakes are more than just cupcakes; they are a gateway for me to spread love to my friends, family and clients, one bite at a time, creating smiles and marking life’s joyous occasions. In their simple way, they truly bring bliss to people, and that’s what I get to do every day through my work.

Bliss Cakes are edible art, topped with colorful flowers, filled with succulent fruits and nectars, spiced up with exotic superfoods, and crafted with only the freshest, local and organic ingredients. Most importantly, each cupcake is handmade with love. (In that spirit, I recently started giving a portion of my proceeds to local charities, so I am able to share the love with my community.)

My work hasn’t always been so delicious. Prior to launching Bliss Cakes, I had a successful career doing animation and graphic design for large companies. I enjoyed my work because it allowed me to be creative, but I noticed that my heart was much more fulfilled when I was baking healthy gourmet cupcakes for friends and family.

Whenever I had a spare moment off the computer, I would head straight to the kitchen to create the kind of art I really loved. I would jump at the chance to cater friends’ birthday parties, with plates of Acai Jungle Berry or Mayan Spice Chocolate cupcakes as gifts for any occasion.

It all just seemed like a hobby, until one day it dawned on me: “This is my bliss!” Making cupcakes and seeing the smiles they inspire is what makes my heart sparkle, so I knew I needed to be doing it full-time.

By taking that leap of faith and following my heart, my vision of spreading love through edible art has blossomed into a successful business—and also led me to win the first-ever all-vegan episode of Cupcake Wars on the Food Network.

One of the most rewarding elements of my job is being able to present my Bliss Cakes to people who are increasing love and health in our world through their positive, visionary work. For example, I’ve been invited to cater events such as the L.A. premier of Oscar-Nominated actress Ellen Page’s The Vanishing of the Bees; the Humane Society’s 25th Anniversary Genesis Awards Afterparty with Betty White and Sex & the City’s Kristin Davis; and the launch gala for E! News host Giuliana Rancic’s healthy-living website, Fab Fit Fun.

For me, the success of Bliss Cakes has reinforced the wisdom of following your heart and your passion. When you’re doing what you love, it’s a joy to put in the hard work that leads to success. That joy is magical and deliciously contagious, spreading like fairy sparkles wherever you go.

I’ve also learned a few other things along the way:

Your Ideas are Never Too Big. For anyone who thinks their dream is impossible, remember that your vision can never too big. Think outside the box and turn your idea into your reality.

Listen to Others. There is a wealth of information around you if you just listen. Don’t be afraid to ask for opinions and feedback. When I first started making cupcakes, I gave away samples to friends and family, and I took their feedback to heart. Their suggestions inspired me to fine-tune my recipes and create the most delectable treats possible.

Focus on Quality and Quantity. The key to running a successful specialty business is to be able to master both quality and quantity—delivering your product to a wide audience but never compromising on quality.

Be Resourceful. By utilizing your resources in a creative way, not only can you ensure business success, but you can also be good to the environment, your health and your personal integrity.

Create Incentives. People have a lot of choices when it comes to the companies they support, so give them an incentive to choose you. I do this by offering gluten-free and vegan options, using 100% natural and organic ingredients, and giving back to local charities.

My final advice to women who want to make their dreams a reality is: “Always believe in yourself.” You alone have the power to transform your ideas into reality.

So believe in yourself and your dreams, follow your heart, and do what makes you happy!
