WE PREPARE
MARIA'S DISASTER PREPAREDNESS INITIATIVE
California! When disaster strikes, will you be ready? I think California is one of the most remarkable states in this nation with its wealth of natural resources, human resources and unlimited possibilities. But let’s face it, it’s not the safest place to live. We may not have to deal with hurricanes and tornados on a regular basis, but we have our fair share of natural disasters. And in this post 9/11 society, we are certainly not immune to terrorist attack. Thinking about having a family disaster plan shouldn’t make you feel like Chicken Little. It makes smart sense to be prepared to take care of yourself, your family and your community in the event of a disaster. After all, it is not a matter of if, but when. So let’s Be Smart, Be Responsible, Be Prepared and Get Ready.
You can do this by starting with a family disaster plan. I know how uncomfortable it is to think about the worst thing that can happen to you - something happening to your family. But if you bite the bullet and are proactive about it, you will be creating the best line of defense for keeping your family safe from harm. Previous disasters have shown that family and community preparedness can save property and save lives.
Here’s what your family disaster plan should include:
- Where to meet if you have to evacuate
- A designated “family contact” person out of state
- How to get important information for your community
- How to take care of family pets
- An emergency kit for home and car with necessities like non-perishable food, water, blanket, battery operated radio, first aid supplies, extra keys, cash and medications
Don’t forget to include your children when creating a family disaster plan. The more informed and involved your children are in disaster planning, the more prepared they’ll be. It is never a dumb question to ask, if disaster strikes will my family be ready? When you’re ready, California is too. Think about it.
And one more thing before you go… Take action. Get started today.
