5 Reasons Why Organizing Your Physical Space Can Clear Your Mental Space
It’s a problem many are familiar with: You’re drowning in so much stuff that you don’t know where to begin clearing the clutter. You have a million things on your to-do list that seem to rank more important than going through your things. Your life feels like an unending cycle of chaos and stress—and you’re not sure where to find calm.
Taking time to declutter and organize your belongings can have a positive life-changing domino effect on our everyday lives. As an organizing expert, I work with my clients to help them see how streamlining our spaces and owning less can be key in leading more fulfilled lives. Because life is about connection, not collection. Sometimes the greatest form of self-care is putting in organizational work—at your own pace—that your future self will thank you for.
The Merits of Clearing Out the Clutter
1.It gives you back precious time. My biggest motto, and the reason I started my business, Life in Jeneral, is that when your things are organized, you get time back that you may have otherwise spent looking for something or trying to do a quick, band-aid cleanup. When everything in your home has an intentional home, you have the time and room for the things that matter most in life.
2. Clear spaces make for clear minds. Ultimately, organizing your physical space creates room in your mind to relax. The stress or anxiety you might feel from not knowing where something important is, or from feeling pressure to juggle life and managing your home can be solved with one day of intentional organizing. It’s an undertaking, but in the grand scheme, one to two days of decluttering and setting up systems is worth daily mental space. Keep that end goal in mind as you go.
3. It promotes creativity and positive thinking. Being in a clear space can allow for more creative and positive thinking because your mind is no longer crowded by clutter. Your mind is also not consumed by those things that you’ve put on the backburner. An organized home has fewer distractions giving you the power to think more freely and positively, which ultimately promotes productivity.
4. Having a space that you’re proud of can improve your wellbeing. When you are happing to come home to your living space that promotes an undeniably great feeling and sense of ease. As humans, it’s in our nature to want to own something that brings us pride and joy. It feels like an accomplishment and a reflection of who we are on the inside. When your home brings you joy, it can in turn improve your overall mood. An organized home is a warm and inviting one, and one that you’ll want to soak in with the people you love.
5. Flexible structure allows for change as you continue to evolve. Lastly, I want to emphasize that organization is not synonymous with perfection. Life will continue to change as you and those around you grow and evolve over time. With this, your systems of organization may need to change as well. When I organize, I try to keep this in mind, creating the most flexible structure possible. Accounting for these ebbs and flows in advance can save your future-self stress. Giving yourself grace regardless of where you’re at on your organizational journey is the best thing you can do to clear your mental space.
