My Sunday ‘To Be’ List

by MARLEE MATLIN

I would like “to be” more available to my family and friends, embracing and savouring every moment of time with them.

I would like “to be” a better cook by not only following recipes as I’ve done during COVID, but taking something on the page and creating dishes with a twist that would wow my family (especially my kids because, God knows, that seems to be the way to reach them, through food).

I would like “to be” not the only one to be breaking barriers, but one of many in Hollywood, fighting discrimination and pushing for accessibility, inclusivity and authenticity.

I would like “to be” honest and transparent, communicating that I am open to any ideas/thoughts, even if we disagree.

Finally, I would like “to be” on a beach, not having to worry about hair or makeup or what I’m wearing.

MARLEE MATLIN

An actress, motivational speaker, and activist, Marlee Matlin won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the film Children of a Lesser God when she was 21, making her both the youngest and only deaf artist to ever receive that honor.  Over the course of her career, Matlin has garnered worldwide attention for her TV and film work. Deaf since she was 18-months-old, she is a prominent member of the National Association of the Deaf. Matlin is the author of I’ll Scream Later and the executive producer of the new Oscar-nominated short film, Feeling Through.  The first film to star a DeafBlind actor, Feeling Through is a coming of age story that follows Tereek, a teen wandering the streets of New York, desperate for a place to crash when he encounters Artie, a DeafBlind man in need of help getting home. From an awkward meeting between strangers emerges an intimate bond, and a journey that forever changes Tereek. To watch the film see below and to learn more about Matlin visit marleematlin.net.
